Continuing our “Gentleman of the Screen” strand, Andrew Kelly introduces one of the purest expressions of the legendary “Lubitsch Touch.” The Marriage Circle (1924) is a sparkling silent comedy of manners set among Vienna’s elegant middle classes, where two marriages are unsettled by flirtation, jealousy and suspicion.

At its centre is Adolphe Menjou, immaculate and slyly charming, delivering a defining performance built on raised eyebrows, subtle gestures and quiet confidence. Played out through perfectly timed visual jokes and sophisticated storytelling, the film remains daring, playful and remarkably modern.
