Continuing Slapstick’s opening-day exploration of comedy, faith and irreverence, this special double-bill presents two silent-era masterpieces that find humour and humanity in the search for redemption. In For Heaven’s Sake (1926), Harold Lloyd plays a millionaire playboy whose misadventures in evangelism spark both chaos and compassion. In The Pilgrim (1923), Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp dons the robes of a minister in a story that turns mistaken identity into a meditation on grace, guilt and forgiveness.
With reflections and introduction from Robin Ince alongside others, this evening celebrates how Chaplin and Lloyd used laughter not to mock belief, but to reveal the kindness and folly of being human. With synchronised scores.
